Kayaking the Gauja River: A Beginner's Guide
Everything you need to know about paddling Latvia's most technical river. Covers paddle technique, reading currents, safety equipment, and seasonal variations that affect your experience.
Read the guide14 years of hands-on experience teaching kayaking, cycling, paddleboarding, and winter sports across Latvia's most beautiful landscapes.
Growing up in Sigulda shaped everything. Weekends meant exploring the Gauja Valley with friends, paddling down the river, cycling through pine forests. It wasn't some grand plan — just kids who loved being outside.
After finishing my sports science degree at Latvian University of Life Sciences in 2010, I wasn't ready for a desk job. So I started freelancing as a guide and instructor for various tourism operators. Those early years taught me what actually works — not textbook theory, but real techniques that keep people safe and having genuine fun.
In 2015, I started my own adventure education consultancy. Then in 2018, something clicked. I developed a comprehensive safety framework for commercial paddleboarding operations on Latvian lakes. Twelve regional recreation centers adopted it. That's when I realized my real strength wasn't just being good at these activities — it was translating that knowledge into systems others could trust and use.
Now at zilavekas SIA, I focus on creating educational content that bridges the gap between outdoor education principles and the actual experiences people have on the water, on trails, and on the ice.

I've spent thousands of hours on Latvia's water, trails, and snowy landscapes. Each area represents deep, practical knowledge developed through real experience.
The Gauja isn't just a river — it's a technical challenge with limestone cliffs, varying currents, and seasonal changes. I've documented every section and know the hazards by heart. My guides cover everything from paddle technique to reading the water.
This 35-kilometer route attracts everyone from families to fitness enthusiasts. I've mapped every turn, identified the toughest sections, and created materials that help people actually enjoy the ride instead of just suffering through it.
Lakes offer a gentler introduction to water sports, but they come with their own challenges. Wind, water temperature, balance — I've created safety protocols that are now used across 12 regional recreation centers. My educational materials help instructors teach effectively.
Winter sports require different preparation and different risks. Sigulda's terrain is perfect for learning technique while building fitness. I've documented trails by difficulty and created training guides for both beginners and serious winter athletes.
The protocols I've developed for water sports have been adopted by recreation centers across Latvia. This isn't just best practices — it's tested, real-world frameworks that actually keep people safe.
I regularly contribute to Latvian Outdoor Recreation Association publications and national tourism content. My writing focuses on making complex outdoor knowledge accessible without oversimplifying the actual challenges.
Every guide I write, every protocol I develop starts with risk assessment. Not because I'm cautious to the point of killing adventure — but because you can't enjoy an experience if you're genuinely worried about getting hurt. Good safety frameworks are invisible. You don't notice them because they work.
The Gauja, Ķīšezers Lake, the trails around Sigulda — these places have their own character. My writing tries to capture that. It's not just "here's how to paddle" — it's "here's what makes this river unique and how that affects your paddling." Authenticity matters.
Outdoor education materials don't need to be technical jargon. I write for real people — beginners who don't know the terminology, experienced athletes who just want the facts, parents deciding if this is right for their kids. Clear doesn't mean dumbed down.
Conditions change. Equipment improves. Techniques evolve. I stay current through annual recertification in water sports safety, regular field testing, and collaboration with other specialists. The moment I stop learning is when my guides become outdated.
